SIX LIONS NAMED TO FALL 2008 ECC SCHOLAR-ATHLETE HONOR ROLL

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Mar. 13, 2009) – On Friday afternoon, the East Coast Conference sent out its tally of scholar-athletes for the Fall 2008 semester, and six players from Molloy College were selected to the honor roll. Each recipient is nominated by their school, and then voted on by the Faculty Athletic representatives for Scholar-Athlete of the Year laud.

Senior netminder Ettore Morelli (North Bellmore, N.Y.) was chosen from the Lions’ men’s soccer team. This season, he helped Molloy to its first-ever ECC Championship and NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. Morelli posted a 12-6-2 mark with five shutouts and a goals-against average of 1.27, which ranked 62nd-best in the country. He also recorded 91 saves and a .778 save percentage (NCAA – 53rd). For his efforts, Morelli garnered East Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year accolades.

From volleyball, it was junior libero Monika Rodziewicz (Gdansk, Poland). She closed out the year with 339 digs (3.11 D/G), which was second-best on the team. Rodziewicz also served 20 aces and dished 17 assists in 109 sets. Sophomore Shannon Skeggs (Massapequa, N.Y.) got her name on the roster as a part of the Lions’ women’s tennis squad. In 2008, she notched a victory in the fourth and fifth singles flights. She also teamed up with sophomore Amanda Colquhoun (Floral Park, N.Y.) for a win at No. 2 doubles.

Senior defender/midfielder Joanna Taylor (Seaford, N.Y.) was the pick from the women’s soccer team. She led Molloy in the scoring department this season with 11 points (5 G, 1 A). Four of those tallies, which was a team-high, proved to be game-winners. In the process, Taylor served as a team co-captain, and assisted in guiding the Lions to the title match of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division II Championship.

Lastly, from cross country, senior Thomas Leninger (Merrick, N.Y.) represented the men’s squad, while sophomore Danielle Mosca (Valley Stream, N.Y.) brought home the honor on the women’s side. Both of these runners played vital roles en route to Molloy posting fifth-place showings at the ECC Championships. The men also finished 18th at the NCAA Regional Championships, while the women placed 20th.
