FOUR TEAMS INK RECRUITS TO NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Dec. 11, 2008) - Very recently, four Molloy College athletic teams had its recruits sign a national letter of intent, which is a binding contract between the student-athlete and the institution. They were the Lions' women's basketball, softball and men's and women's lacrosse squads - all of which brought in at least two each.
Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke signed three members to her softball squad, including Megan Butterworth (North Bellmore, N.Y.), Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.), and Kelley Jansen (Long Beach, N.Y.).
Butterworth is a four-year varsity starter at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, N.Y. With the Titans, she was part of a squad that won the 2007 NYSCHSGAA title. Butterworth is also a member of the Long Island Sudden Impact Travel Softball Team.
Cassidy-Lyke feels that Butterworth will make an immediate impact because she comes from a strong high school program and a gold-level travel squad. In addition, Butterworth is an athletic south-paw that will have the opportunity to play in the field when not utilized as a pitcher.
Frey will be a dual-sport athlete with the Lions as she will play both tennis and softball. Another Holy Trinity graduate, Frey will compete for a starting position in 2010. She is also going to be able to utilize her speed as an outfielder and create havoc on the base paths as a slapper.
Jansen is currently the team captain at Long Beach High School in Long Beach, N.Y. During her time there, Jansen, who has earned all-county recognition, has been a two-time Nassau County, one-time Long Island and one-time State champion. According to Cassidy-Lyke, she is a strong pitcher with an excellent work ethic that brings a winning tradition to the program.
Head Coach Joe Catalanotti inked four Long Island natives to his men's lacrosse team. They are William Richardson (Holbrook, N.Y.), Joseph Biscardi (Wantagh. N.Y.), Kenneth Lutz (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Anthony Tartaro (Holbrook, N.Y.).
The Molloy women's lacrosse squad added four new players as well. They are Lianne Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y.), Nicole Flores (Bethpage, N.Y.), Alexa Toscano (Bethpage, N.Y.) and Kaitlynn Kelly (Oceanside, N.Y.). Scorcia has been a three-year starter at H. Frank Carey High School. She has led the team in goals and scoring. For the Lions, Scorcia will add depth at two positions and go straight to the cage without any remorse.
Flores and Toscano are lacrosse competitors at Plainedge High School. Head Coach Tom Campolettano states that Flores will add a lot to the team with her speed and versatility, while Toscano is a smart player who sees the field very well and can finish on her shots, Lastly, Kelly was an all-conference selection as a sophomore and an all-county honoree as a junior while at Oceanside High School. All in all, she is a physical player that still has room to grow. But, the college game is very suited to her style of play.
Head Coach Tim O'Hagan recruited two new players in Courtney Dolnick (Weston, Fla.) and Christina Marra (Dix Hills, N.Y.) to compete for the Molloy women's basketball team in 2009-10. They are both exceptional shooting guards who are smart and expected to be solid additions to the team. O'Hagan says that he is looking forward to coaching both of these incoming freshmen.
